The Basic Idea
Kids Radio – Scout Edition uses simple equipment and internet streaming to share real radio sounds with kids and families. Here is the basic idea of how everything fits together.
1. Radios Listening in the Real World
We set up small radios in different locations and tune them to local weather and information stations, such as NOAA Weather Radio and other public service broadcasts where available. These radios listen just like a radio in your home, car, or campsite would.
2. Connecting Radios to Our System
Each radio is connected to a phone or small device that sends the live audio into our system. Think of it as holding a phone near a radio, but with a cleaner connection and continuous power so it can stay on for long periods.
3. Streaming to the Website
The audio is then streamed over the internet so you can listen through the Kids Radio – Scout Edition website. When you press play on one of our listening pages, you are hearing the same sounds that local listeners near that radio can hear, just with a short delay.
4. Learning While You Listen
Alongside each stream, we share basic explanations, safety reminders, and links to official resources. These include things like:
- What different alert words mean
- Why weather radios are recommended as one of several ways to get warnings
- Links to official weather-education pages, games, and activities from NOAA and the National Weather Service
5. Safety and Legal Notes
We only stream public service broadcasts and other audio that is allowed to be shared for educational purposes.
NOAA and many other U.S. government agencies place their educational and public-service materials in the public domain, which makes it easier for educational projects like this to exist.
Important: Our streams are meant for learning, not as your only source of emergency alerts. Always have your own local radio, alerts, or apps for real-time warnings.
