Your family-friendly guide to weather radios, outdoor listening, and wilderness safety.

What is Kids Radio?

Kids Radio – Scout Edition is a simple, free resource created to help kids, families, and outdoor groups learn about real weather radio signals and how they work. We aren't selling anything or collecting donations β€” we just want to make it easier for curious explorers to tune in, learn, and have fun using real radios.

How It Works

  • We connect radios in different areas to our station using simple setups.
  • Those radios share live NOAA and public radio broadcasts through our site.
  • You can listen online, learn how to find local weather stations, and practice safety skills right at home or at camp.

What You'll Learn

  • Understand how a radio picks up local weather stations.
  • Learn what different alerts mean and why they matter.
  • Hear real examples of broadcasts across the country.
  • Explore fun, safe ways to use radios on hikes, campouts, and family trips.

Our Mission

Our goal is to encourage curiosity about radio, weather, and outdoor safety. We use publicly available, trusted information from professionals such as the National Weather Service, NOAA, and other well-known communication and weather organizations. With our setup, kids and families can listen, learn, and stay connected to nature and safety awareness.

Safety & Simplicity

We always promote safe listening practices and never share private or restricted frequencies. The purpose of this project is educational β€” just to make learning about weather and radio communication easy, enjoyable, and 100% free.

Field Station Setup (Real World)

This is similar to the real Kids Radios listening posts we use near major airports and remote areas. A handheld radio is tuned to a weather broadcast, and a phone relays the audio so our software can convert it to text and track changing conditions.

πŸ“» Handheld aviation/weather radio tuned to NOAA or ATIS frequencies
πŸ“± Phone connected by audio cable to relay broadcasts
πŸŽ’ Portable storage box / camp kit for field deployment
πŸ’» Software transcribes weather audio to text for tracking
πŸ“‘
NOAA Weather Radio Frequencies: All stations broadcast between 162.400 - 162.550 MHz. These are special VHF channels just for weather - not music or regular radio. In the field, tune your weather radio to these frequencies to receive emergency alerts!

How to Use This Page

  1. Find your region (Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, etc.)
  2. Look for a city near you or pick any station to explore
  3. Click "TUNE IN" to hear the live NOAA broadcast
  4. Listen for alerts - watches, warnings, and advisories
  5. Practice explaining what the broadcast means to a friend or parent

Bonus: If you have a real weather radio, tune it to the matching frequency (e.g., 162.550 MHz) and compare!
